Side by Side for November 2016

I recently got a catalog in the mail advertising greeting cards for Christmas. Christmas, as you know, is the birthday of Jesus, the Savior of the world. The Bible tells of His birth with the accompanying stories of angels, wise men, shepherds, mangers, and stars. But this catalog seemed to miss all that. It seemed to say that Christmas was just a “season” of warm thoughts, best wishes, and friendly greetings. The whole reason for the season was missing.

As believers in Jesus, who was born to save us from our sins and give us the hope of eternal life in heaven, it would make sense for us to send Christmas cards that actually talked about the real story of Christmas. Our world needs to be reminded of the truth of Christmas with sayings like: “peace on earth”, “joy to the world” and “let earth receive her King” and Scripture verses like “unto us a child is born”, “glory to God in the highest” and “Prince of Peace”.

I want to challenge you, if you send Christmas cards, to let your cards be a witness to your faith. For ideas, try:

Keep Christ in Christmas. Remind people of the real reason for the season. Wise men still seek Him – do your greeting cards tell people about your faith?

I love the month of November because of the wonderful holiday of Thanksgiving. It's a time of being with family and friends to give thanks together to our God for all that He has done for us.  If you are attending a Thanksgiving meal this November, I highly recommend you take with you this blessing that you can ask to share with those at your gathering, and then invite them to share any other Bible verses they like on the topic of Thanksgiving.  We have so much to be grateful for! Let us take this opportunity to rejoice and be thankful to Him and bless His name!

"Heavenly Father, on Thanksgiving Day / We bow our hearts to You and pray.
We give You thanks for all You've done / Especially for the gift of Jesus, Your Son.
For beauty in nature, Your glory we see / For joy and health, friends and family,
For daily provision, Your mercy and care / These are the blessings You graciously share.
So today we offer this response of praise / With a promise to follow You all of our days."  (by Mary Fairchild)
